Not only was Fort Myers, FL affected by the Red Tide this summer, but the blue green algae laden waters released from Lake Okeechobee also polluted Southwest Florida. This article explains the impacts in Southwest Florida, and how nutrients stirred up by Hurricane Irma have exacerbated this problem.

Thousands of fish, eels and turtles are dying, sometimes as far as the eye can see, in parts of southwest Florida . . . The suspected culprit is a toxic algae bloom known as "red tide."
