Notes by Jan Booher

In Attendance: Jan Booher (UU Justice Florida), Crystal Johnson - beginning of call (Community Forum Foundation, Inc.), Karen Grabia (All Faiths Unitarian Congregation of Ft. Myers), Shirley Burns (local Pan-Hellenic Council, Friendship Missionary Baptist Church), Joan Marshall (All Faiths Unitarian Congregation of Ft. Myers Climate Action Team), Holley Rauen (UU Church of Ft. Myers), Ensign Cowell (All Faiths Unitarian Congregation of Ft. Myers), Gary Robbins (UU Church of Ft. Myers).

Updates:

Jan Booher (UUJF) spoke with Rev. Allison Farnum (UUCFM). She will follow along with the Meeting Notes from the WFL Resilience System as they are posted, and let us know when she has contributions to make. The Steering Committee of Florida Interfaith Climate Actions Network gave us permission to have a webpage on their site Resilience Volunteer Youth Corps webpage. The website is owned by Florida Council of Churches. UUJF is a founding organization of Florida Interfaith Climate Actions Network, and Jan is one of its website administrators, so she will maintain the webpage.

Crystal Jounson (CFFI) received the $10,000 check from New Florida Majority Education Fund and is ready to deposit the funds. Ft. Myers High JROTC staff is very interested in being a part of this project. They have suggestions based on experience they have had with a Mormon hurricane volunteer program. Crystal spoke with Mr. Merriweather (Lee County Emergency Management) who could not make this Zoom call, but is willing to be on Zoom calls in the future.

Shirley Burns (PHC/FMBC) participated in the meeting with JROTC. Dr. Jesse Bryson was also in attendance, and will be the primary point of contact. Col. Robinson is the lead for the Ft. Myers High JROTC. The program

Joan said that Crystal attended the CAT. Plan for folks excited early on who fall off.

Karen Grabia (AFUC) suggests we work with 8th - 12th graders.

Holley Rauen (UUCFM) -  Has been speaking w Amy Clifton (UUCGN) and Rev. Allison Farnum (UUCFM). Karen Brown (UUCFM) went to the CAT meeting today as did Crystal Johnson. Committed and very active members of the UUCFM Social Justice Committee are beginning to take an interest in this project. LIFE and Waterkeepers are also interested. Waterkeepers is beginning to write for grants. Holley has experience as a triage nurse assigned to hurricane shelters for the disabled. LIFE Ministries ( Life Interfaith Action Empowerment) has about 14 congregations involved; including Pastor Glover’s  Mt. Hermon Ministries. LIFE is a DART affiliate that turned out 800 last year to their Nehemiah Action.

People on the call volunteered for Task List assignments using a shared screen. (If you would like to sign up for something, please do. This is just to create a supportive structure to begin our work, and will evolve.)

Changes were suggested for the Resilience Volunteer Youth Corps webpage, and have since been made. These included changing the program to include 8th to 12th graders, with the decision to have an application process, so we get students who will remain in the community during the hurricane season. UU Church of Ft. Myers’ name was corrected.

The next meeting will tentatively be set on October 16th at 11am, depending - if Mr. Mayfield (Director, Lee County Public Safety – Emergency Management) can attend at that time.

Here are some talking points Jan sent me. This is a list of things mentioned on the conference calls:

  • The Community Forum Foundation has received $20,000 to get started increasing resilience
  • We are focused on having a better community response than we had after Hurricane Irma
  • There are several churches working on this, including Rev. Black-Smith, who is offering her church as a Resilience Hub that will need some work
  • Our youth need leadership opportunities, and community safety is an important area where we need to grow leadership
  • We will document hours in training and hours in community service
  • We will recognize graduates of the program (T-shirts, certificates, public recognition)

  • We will be working with Emergency Management, the health community and the faith community on preparedness, with first aid and basic emergency response that trained volunteers can do
  • We will get the students training on how to sign people up for Code Red and evacuation assistance if they will need it
  • We want our youth to learn how to work with the elderly, and we want to be able to help the elderly

  • We didn't have any shelters or places to go for help in Dunbar after Hurricane Irma, and now we have the opportunity to prepare two Resilience Hubs (STARS Complex & Rev. Black Smith's church. We want to involve the students in the process of making the community safer and more resilient.

Tuesday, Oct 2, 2018 Zoom Call Link to Recording with Chat notes

Dear Karen,

I believe Pr Verna Black-Smith is there.  I think it would be fine to contact them directly.  I wonder what others think.  I met Pr Black Smith last month at a LIFE Clergy Caucus.  If Holley goes, she can share that connection.  If you all want me to call over, let me know.

I will be offline from now through the weekend and will be back to follow up with any asks on Tuesday.  I am meeting with Pr Glover Tuesday 1130am

In love, growth, and service,
Allison

Hi Everyone,

I need to know what are we asking of Pastor Glover? I understand the desire to view Apostolic House of God's in order to establish it as a Resilience Hub, but I'm not quit sure of what is being asked of Pastor Glover? I would like to be apart of the discussion whenever we make contact with anyone from the community concerning the Resilience Volunteer Youth Corp.

Thanks,

Ms. Crystal Johnson

In love, growth, and service,
Allison

Hi Crystal and network folks,

I am happy to leave it to you, Crystal,  to establish contact with Dr Glover or perhaps there is a deeper strategy of which I am not aware in approaching faith based groups. Based off of your talking points my hope had been to be of service to the group by talking to him about this movement. I am here to be of service. I have a coffee date set with him and am happy to use the time to catch up collegially and leave the resilience youth corps intro to someone else. Tomorrow is my sabbath. I will check my email Tuesday morning and see if you want me to serve in this way. If not, no problem.

Let me know. Thank you. If I don’t hear back, I will err on the side of caution as an ally and leave it for another time and maybe another person.

Relationships of solidarity are more important than any desire of mine to be “helpful” and actually be harmful.  Please accept my apology if I have over stepped or leaned in too hard.

Hi Rev. Allison Farnum,

Thank you for your response. I ment no disrespect to anyone and I appreciate all of your help.

It was brought to my attention that although I recognize the importance of outside support the community at large has a history of being unable to collectively collaborate.  As a residing community member and the lead of this particular project, I realised the importance of my presence.

RevFarnum I forwarded those talking points to you because I thought it would easier to gain acceptance that way. However I was reminded that easier isnt always the best way to go about it. Thanks again and please forgive my approach if I offended anyone.

Respectfully,

Ms. Crystal Johnson

In love, growth, and service,
Allison

Changes were suggested for the Resilience Volunteer Youth Corps webpage, and have since been made. These included changing the program to include 8th to 12th graders, with the decision to have an application process, so we get students who will remain in the community during the hurricane season. UU Church of Ft. Myers’ name was corrected.

The next meeting will tentatively be set on October 16th at 11am, depending - if Mr. Mayfield (Director, Lee County Public Safety – Emergency Management) can attend at that time.

In love, growth, and service,
Allison

Hi all,

Is it possible to also set up a meeting to see the Apostolic Church?  I am waiting for an OK from Crystal, as I don't know if it is appropriate for me to contact the pastor there?  Maybe Rev. Allison needs to set it up?

Holley and I are both interested in going.  Would like to get info on site with pictures ASAP.

Thanks.
